Introduction |
Hi everybody! Thanks for stopping by the sourmusic Kart race track. My name is Angela and I'm in charge around here. If you need my help, I'll be around. We race one seater, metal pipe frame go carts around here. There are two engine sizes to choose from: 50cc or 100cc. All of the carts are more or less the same. It's the drivers that can make a difference in winning. Each one has a strength and weakness. Try using different ones until you find the best one for you. Good luck out there! |

Go cart racing is simple to learn, but it takes great patience and determination to master. Some go cart racers have gone on to become world class Formula One drivers. To begin your career, load the ROM in your favorite SNES emulator, wait for the title screen to appear, and then select your desired game mode. |

A total of 8 carts line up for the GP race - 2 human players against 6 opponents.
1P GAME |
In Sour Kart GP, you can select either a 50cc or 100cc cart. The 100cc cart is quite a bit quicker than the 50cc one. The other drivers are more aggressive in the 100cc races too. If you're just starting out, you may want to warm up with the 50cc machines. Races other than Sour Kart GP always use 100cc machines. |

Racing RulesSour Kart GP (1 Player) |
Each race is 5 laps. If you place in the top 4 finishing positions, you can go to the next course in the circuit. If you place 5th or lower, you'll lose one of your extra carts and you'll have to try that race again. After the winning cart crosses the finish line, finishing positions will be displayed on the left side of the screen. |
You'll start the Sour Kart GP in 8th place. As soon as the starting light turns green, the race begins. If you rev your engine too high before the green light, you'll peel out! Experiment to find the best way to accelerate at the starting line. Half of the screen will show an overview of the course and where all of the racers are currently.To change this view to your rear view mirror and see what's going on behind you, press the "X" or "Select" button. The bottom right of the racing screen shows what place you're in. |
|
Each time you choose "Retry", you lose one of your remaining carts. You start the game with 4 carts total, so you can "Retry" 3 times. If you press the "Start" button during the race, the game will pause and you can choose to "Give Up" or select "No" to return to the race. Every time you "Give Up", you lose one of your remainin carts. |

Stuff On The Track |
|||||||||||
The racers who place in the top 4 receive points. At the end of the circuit, the overall winner will be determined by the number of points. |
||||||||||||
|
Zipper Run over this and you'll ZIP! |
Jump Run over this to jump. |
||||||||||
Drivers who come in 5th place or lower will have to "Retry" or "End" the game. Points are only awarded for placing in the top 4. The place you finish in will be your starting position for the next race. For example, if you come in 2nd place, you'll start in the 2nd position in the next race. |
Joe Blocks |
|||||||||||
ItemsPress the "A" button to use. |
Energy Drink |
Lime |
You get a temporary boost of speed by using an energy drink. Sometimes, you can make an enemy spin out if you hit them while you are using one. |
Use the Lime to fire at enemy carts - a hit will send an enemy into a spin. Limes can bounce off of barriers, so you can try for bank shots too. |
Canadian Maple Leaf |
Lemon |
Using the Leaf makes you invincible for a short period of time. During this time, your speed increases and you are immune to enemy attacks. If you fall into water or off an edge, you will lose your invincibility. The Leaf is very useful. |
The Lemon is a lot like the Lime except that it works like a guided missle! If you have an enemy in your sights, let the Lemon go. Unless you are too close or too far away, the Lemon rarely misses its mark. |
Red Potion |
Crappy CD |
Use the Red Potion and you'll see a big flash. After the flash, all of the other racers will become smaller in size for a while. During this time, they will move slower and are very vulnerable. |
Nobody likes a Crappy CD, so everyone should avoid going near it. If a cart should happen to run over it, they will spin out. |
Gold Record |
Microphone |
The Gold Record adds 2 of them to your total. Push the "A" button right away when you get one. Collect as many as you can! |
Using a Microphone always gives people an adrenaline high. Using one while you're racing will allow you to jump much higher than if you used the "L" or "R" buttons. Use this to jump over enemies, clear obstacles, or even clear a small gap for a shortcut. |
Ghost |
The Ghost makes you and your cart invisible. You'll also be able to take your opponent's item. |
|
NOTE: Red Potions and Gold Records only appear in the GP and Match Race modes. The Ghost only appears in Battle Mode and Match Race. |
Sour Kart GP (2 Players) |
Match Race (2 Players Only) |
A split screen is used in 2 player mode, so that you and your opponent can compete at the same time. The racer using controller #1 will start in 8th place, and the racer using controller #2 will start in 7th place. If either player finishes in the top 4, both will go on to the next race. |
This is a one-on-one, head-to-head race to the finish. Use your items wisely to put yourself in the winner's circle. |
Time Trial (1 Player Only) |
Battle Mode (2 Players Only) |
The Time Trial is great for practicing. There are no items or Gold Records to worry about, just a nice clean race track. The top 5 times and drivers for each track are saved in your ROM's .SRM file. You can race on any track and choose any driver. |
Each player has 3 balloons protecting their cart. The object here is to burst all 3 of your opponent's balloons using items that you obtain from the Joe Blocks. Whoever runs out of balloons first, loses! |
Sour Kart GP (2 Players) |
Time Trial |
When you finish a Time Trial, your finishing time will be displayed. At this point, you can choose to retry that track or choose a new one. If you pick "Replay" you can watch how you did in the last race. If you pause the game or do some really weird driving, the "Replay" option may not appear. |
How To Win in Battle Mode |
Secret Weapons for Winning: Power Sliding |
|
|
Speed Through Tight Corners! |
|
The Win/Loss indicator in Battle Mode or Match Race shows up to 99 wins and losses. Before you start playing the Battle Mode or Match Race, it's a good idea to set a limit. For example, the first person to win 3 rounds, wins the game. If one of the players give up, that race is a draw. To reset the win/loss indicator, you must close your emulator and reload the game. The reset option within the emulator will not clear the count. |
If your timing isn't quite right, you may slide off the course or even spin out. If you find yourself going out of control, let up on the gas. (This applies to normal driving too.) Also, power slides are very useful in Battle Mode when you are trying to get away from an opponent that is on your tail. |
Collect the Gold Records |
How Many Gold Records Do You Lose When...? |
||||||||||
Gold Records are all over the ground. Keep an eye open for them and always know how many you have. Each Gold Record you pick up (up to 10) makes your cart go faster. Whenever an enemy runs into you or you spin out, you lose some. Angela will also charge you if she needs to pick you up. If you don't have any Gold Records and an enemy hits you, you will spin out, so be sure to collect as many as you can. *Any amount over 10 are surplus. |
|
||||||||||
At the beginning of a race, the number of Gold Records you have is determined by your starting position. |
|||||||||||
|
You cannot carry your Gold Records to another course. You need to start over collecting them. Also remember that you must be on the ground to collect Gold Records. Even if you are slightly off the ground, you cannot collect Gold Records. |
||||||||||
The 8 Cart Drivers |
|
There are basically 4 types of cart drivers. If each player picksthe same type of driver in 2 player mode, the race should be very close. |

Freddy Goulet |
Daniel |
Bio: Singer for Electric Lemonade. The "Canadian Maple Leaf" invincibilty item is actually a piece of his French-Canadian heritage that is being shared. Likes: Singing, maple syrup, hockey, and fuzzy slippers. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Invincibility. If you hear a funny sound and see him flashing, get away from the man! He is raging over something like hockey going on strike again. |
Bio: A guest artist from Double Dutch Records. Daniel's pretty chill and laid back when he's got a smoke. Don't get the wrong idea though. The guy knows how to rock! He's also been known to torture Elmo a time or two with Sunfighter. Likes: Cigarettes, burning guitars, playing loud. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Invincibility. This dude can rage! When he gets pissed, things get broken. Stay out of his way if you see him flashing! |
Fast Acceleration |
|
Sunfighter |
Gully |
Bio: President and founder of DoubleDutchRecords. His driving skills from living in South Florida for so long make him one tough driver to beat! Likes: Tea, chess, hikes, and uh... other stuff... Known weapon to use against other drivers: Wine Bottles. He likes it and wants you to try some. But if you do, you'll get all messed up and shrink. Worse yet, while you're shrunk, you can get squished by other drivers! |
Bio: Originally from Wisconsin. He loves that football team in Green Bay. He now resides in South Florida and has developed quite a lead foot while driving. Likes: Cheese curds, football, golf, and lutefisk. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Footballs. He throws them with deadly accuracy, unlike the QB's for his favorite team. |
High Top Speed |
|
Jakey Boones |
Jules |
Bio: Former guitarist for The Scoundrals and long time resident of the Brainerd Lakes area. He's known for his short fuse and has been known to throw stuff. Likes: Punk music, pirates, hockey, and freeze pops. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Spaghetti rings. One time while working at Lame Foods, he lost his temper and smashed a can open on the ground. They have been his weapon of choice ever since. He puts a helluva spin on those cans when he throws them at other racers. |
Bio: An enigma. A one time member of Electric Lemonade, but left to pursue his own music with BFD. There's hope for a new collaboration with Freddy someday. Likes: Beanies, tattoos, piercings, and instruments. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Crappy CD's. He doesn't know how they got into his CD player, but he's mad about it and wants to hit you with them. |
Good Control |
|
Tyler |
Rozy |
Bio: This dude can play a few instruments, but never in a band. He is the epitome of cool. In his free time, he's an expert in the lawn and garden center. Likes: Classic rock, hedgehogs, pizza, and tacos. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Limes. Why limes? Why not??? I'm not going to question the man! |
Bio: The real talent in Electric Lemonade. He plays the instruments while Freddy goofs around. Also was the singer for The Scoundrals. His art is the heart and soul of what keeps sourmusic going. Likes: Frenchies, beards, hockey, and loud music. Known weapon to use against other drivers: Wine. He has nothing better to do with it except for launching it at you. Same brand that Sunfighter has, so stay away from it! |
Performance Info |
Angela's Tips |
Standard Performance: The drivers in this category tend to have average acceleration and a decent top speed. Their driving will be average on most courses, but they may struggle in off road conditions. Fast Acceleration: Their acceleration cannot be matched and their top speed is average. That doesn't make them perfect though. You will notice that they might have some trouble steering the wheel. High Top Speed: Just like it sounds, they have the highest rated top speed. Their acceleration is terrible though. That makes them less than ideal in situations where you need to get going again very quickly. Good Control: Average acceleration and good steering make these guys ideal for beginners. Their top speed is not good, so don't expect to set many records with them. In the GP race, the cart in front or behind you may try to make your race more difficult by tossing things on to the track. The best thing to do is concentrate on avoiding these objects. Colliding with any of the items will result in a spin out or being shrunk for a bit. As you get closer to the front of the pack, these attacks get worse. |

Course Description |
Obstacle | Course Description | Obstacle |
Wisconsin: The racers bravely venture in to Gully's turf. It's the enchanted land of beer, cheese, and fireworks. The track is littered with fish. They're green and gold just like everything else in the state. If you hit one, you'll spin out. |
Off The Grid: Sunfighter's dream come true! Tents, camp fires, trees, and hills. Just the basics to live off of so that you can keep away from the city! Try to avoid... Elmo!?!? Yes, he's been buried up to his shoulders and is struggling to free himself. Sunfighter and Daniel have a history of doing mean things to Elmo, like this: http://youtu.be/PVNp9DMQKzs |
||
Lame Foods: The lamest grocery store in the Brainerd area. Race your way around the store as customers shop. Watch out for Rednecks in the first course. The other two courses have John the Grocery Manager. He pops out of nowhere and will grab hold if he gets a chance. If you listen close, you can hear him squeak "What's going on here???". You can shake him off of your cart by hopping. |
Portland: Portland, OR. Home of DoubleDutchRecords. The race tracks here consist of sand bars in the middle of the rivers that flow downtown. You can see the skyline and even the peak of Mt. Hood off in the distance. The fish in the area got spooked by the races. They're flopping around and can spin you out if you hit one.
Nuked Chicago: Accident or attack? Who knows... Either way the city of Chicago is in the midst of total meltdown and the racers want to challenge their skills in this unforgiving environment. There's a mushroom cloud and burning ruins off in the distance. The water of Lake Michigan contains nuclear waste and burning debris. The tracks are composed of sections of roadways that have somehow floated together. |
Brainerd: Brainerd, MN. Home to many things sourmusic related. It's in North Central Minnesota, so of course we're racing on a frozen lake here. You can see the town off in the distance along with it's historical water tower. Beware of Rednecks. They're everywhere! If they're not out ice fishing or mudding, then they're in town causing a scene. |
||
Boones Bay: Jakey Boones' domain. It's everything he could wish for. Punk music and pirate ships! It's rumored to exist somewhere between Cannon Beach and Astoria on Oregon's coast. Look out for Haunted skulls. They will move up and down trying to block your path. They have some weight and force also, so be sure to not get caught underneath one when it comes crashing down. It has the potential to flatten you. |
Record Studio: The record studio. Where good things can happen with music. We're not here to jam though. Focus on your driving. Stay on the red carpet, or else fall into obscurity. Watch out for flashing skulls here. While they look like the ones from Boones Bay, these ones can spin you out as well. |

BLaBrake - Original concept and main hacker BLaBrake gives special thanks to the following: Stifu - Mario Kart hacking would be very tedious without your contributions to the community. Epic Edit saved us countless hours. Your offset notes were like a bible. We really couldn't have done this without you! Dirtbag - This video is what started it all for me. I was grateful to get your help on figuring out a few things too. Thank you for guiding me in changing the demo inputs, title music, and victory tunes. MVS - Although your music porting tutorial was geared towards Super Mario World, I was able to use the main concepts in my hack. You really helped put the "music" in sourmusic Kart. GlitchCog - Your palettes guide was very useful. It was a great timesaver. Jules, Sunfighter, Boones, Gully, Tyler, Daniel, Rozy and Angela - Thank you all for allowing me to put you in the game. I hope I did your personalities justice. My wife - I can't thank you enough for your patience while I finished this. I know it was many hours, but you understood. I love you! Grandma - Your sense of humor shaped my own. I still miss you and dedicate this game to you. My family - Thank you all for your support while I was making this. You - Yes, you reading this! Thank you so much for taking an interest in the project. I don't know how many hundreds of hours were put into this, but the fact that you care enough to play it and read this means a lot! |
